Emma Hardy MP joins calls from Labour to the Pension Regulator to investigate P&O’s unpaid pensions debt

Emma Hardy MP, the Labour MP for Hull West and Hessle, has joined calls for the Pensions Regulator to investigate whether P&O has broken pension rules by failing to pay its share of contributions into the Merchant Navy Ratings Pension Fund.

A story in the Daily Mirror recently suggested that P&O owed the fund, which is pays the pensions for tens of thousands of maritime workers, £146 million. This news comes as it is revealed that P&O’s parent company DP World spent £147 million sponsoring the 2022 European Golf Tour.

P&O Ferries also applied for covid support from the Government and cut 1000 jobs.

Emma Hardy MP said in reaction to the news:

“Hull has a proud fishing heritage and I know that many in Hull West and Hessle remain employed in the shipping industry.

I believe that it is absolutely appalling that DP World seems to have spent money owed to hard-working employees on sponsoring a golf tournament.

It is simply not good enough that the Government has allowed DP World to break pension promises. The Government must urgently review this situation.”
