Leaseholders could see further reforms before Christmas, following a renewed commitment from the Government to overhaul the leasehold system.
Speaking at the Labour Party Conference, Andy Burnham reaffirmed Labour’s pledge to reform leasehold, telling leaseholders that “the days of you being squeezed for every penny are coming to an end” and confirming that a new Leasehold Reform Bill will be introduced before Christmas.
The legislation will build on measures already being implemented through the Leasehold and Freehold Reform Act 2024 and the recently published Draft Commonhold and Leasehold Reform Bill. Together, these reforms are intended to strengthen protections for leaseholders, improve transparency around charges and services, and support the transition away from what many see as an outdated leasehold system.
For too long, many homeowners have faced unfair costs, limited control over their homes and confusion about the fees they are required to pay. The Government is committed to creating a fairer system that gives people stronger rights and better value for money.
I will continue to support these reforms and keep residents updated as further details are announced.
