Please see below a joint statement from Diana Johnson MP and I on the announcement from Ineos to suspend operations at their Saltend site-
“We know many people will be deeply concerned by yesterday’s announcement from Ineos about plans to suspend operations at Saltend, particularly the employees whose jobs could be affected, their families and those working across the wider Saltend site.
Our immediate focus is on protecting local jobs and supporting workers through this period of uncertainty. We have spoken with the Minister and have been reassured that Government officials are in regular contact with the company and are looking closely at what support can be provided.
Throughout those discussions, officials have reiterated the Government’s commitment to supporting the future of the site. Ineos has also identified commercial steps that could improve its long-term economic position. Given the huge importance of the chemicals sector locally and for the wider UK economy, the Government is looking closely at what further support it can provide, including through the £350 million Critical Chemicals Resilience Fund, expected to formally open later this year
It is also important to remember that the site has previously adjusted or paused production in response to market conditions, so suspending operations should not automatically be seen as a permanent closure.
We know that will not remove the very real worry workers, their families are facing. We are receiving regular updates from Ministers, will remain in close contact, and will do everything we can to support the workforce and protect local jobs.”
