I had a very positive meeting this week with Yvette Cooper, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, to discuss the progress being made towards regulating the funeral industry.
This follows confirmation from ministers in her department, delivered from the Dispatch Box, that the Government intends to regulate the funeral industry. We also heard further support for regulation from Andy Burnham during his extensive Q&A session last week.
Out of respect for the Legacy families, I want to share the details of today’s discussion with them first before providing a wider update. I know many people are following this closely, and I will share more as soon as I can.
It has now been two and a half years since the events in Hull involving Legacy. Since that day, I have been relentless in my efforts to secure regulation of the funeral industry. While there is still work to do, the encouraging news is that regulation it’s now firmly on the agenda and real progress is being made.
I am incredibly grateful that we now have a Government which is working to make this happen, and I look forward to sharing more details in due course.
