We’ve started to see some success from the policies the government introduced last year. Just this week it was announced that we have the fastest growing economy in the G7 and NHS waiting lists fell yet again.
This year’s King’s Speech sets out our plan to rebuild Britain through stronger economic security, better public services, cleaner energy and greater opportunity for working people. At its heart is a commitment to tackling the barriers that have held the country back after years of stagnation and decline.
One of our key priorities is strengthening the economy by creating more high paid jobs and supporting growth through a modern industrial strategy. Our plans include investment in apprenticeships, measures to bring down inflation and interest rates, and reforms designed to support key industries and infrastructure. Proposed legislation on areas including European partnerships, nuclear regulation, competition reform, steel and clean water will help secure long term economic resilience and support working families through the cost of living crisis.
The programme also sets out our ambition to end the opportunity crisis. New legislation on education, housing and leaseholder rights will help give more people the chance to succeed, regardless of their background. We want every child to have the opportunity to go as far as their talent and hard work can take them, while strengthening protections and opportunities for working people.
Energy security is another central focus of this programme. By investing in clean, homegrown energy, we can protect households and businesses from future energy price shocks while reducing reliance on volatile international markets. Measures including the Energy Independence Bill and Nuclear Regulation Bill will support long term energy resilience and help bring down bills over time.
On national security, we will introduce legislation covering cyber security, resilience, immigration and tackling hostile state activity. These reforms are intended to restore public confidence, strengthen communities and ensure the country is better prepared for future threats.
The programme also delivers significant reform of public services after years of underinvestment. Planned legislation includes measures to modernise the NHS, improve digital access to services, strengthen accountability in public office and reform policing. Through these reforms, we are rebuilding an active state that works in the interests of communities across the country.
Throughout these reforms, our goal is to raise living standards, widen opportunity and restore pride in communities. We know there are no quick fixes, but we believe long term investment and reform can reverse decline and create a fairer future for working people.
As these policies are developed and implemented, I will be working to make sure that Hull West and Haltemprice benefits as much as possible from the opportunities and investment they bring.
