Dear Friend
I hope you’ve had a lovely summer and enjoyed the beautiful weather. There has been so much happening across Hull West and Haltemprice, and I’ve loved seeing all the community events and people out enjoying themselves.
I’ll be back in parliament next week for another really busy session, in my Ministerial role I’ve got meetings with the national drought group coming up, along with the Flood Resilience Taskforce showing the two different challenges we are having with water, and my first appearance in front of the EFRA committee to talk about everything in my portfolio. But my focus is always on all of you and what Hull and East Riding needs to prosper further so I’ll be talking about investment opportunities and much more and of course keeping you all up to date.
Hull West and Haltemprice Community Champion 2025
I had the absolute pleasure of visiting the winners of this year’s Hull West and Haltemprice Community Champion Awards. These awards mean so much because every nomination and vote came directly from over 1000 local residents, making each winner a true reflection of our community’s appreciation.
I spent time with the incredible team at West Hull Community Hub who have built a welcoming community and provide food, activities, and plenty of good cheer at their sessions on Thursday and Friday mornings.
Then it was on to the Achieve Team at The Warren Youth Project, whose dedication is transforming the lives of young people by helping them reach their full potential through education and support.
We have an individual award too, and it was an honour to present an award to one of our two outstanding individual volunteers, Rick Skelton, whose tireless commitment to Hessle Rangers CIC has made a lasting impact.
Our other winner, Simon Moss, is currently enjoying a well-deserved holiday, and I look forward to celebrating with him soon.
These are the people who make our community strong, compassionate, and proud. I want to extend a heartfelt thank you to everyone who was nominated, they are all champions in my eyes, and to everyone who took the time to nominate and vote. The awards will return next year, and I’m already looking forward to celebrating even more of the amazing people who make Hull West and Haltemprice such a special place to live.
Springhead Golf course
This month I held a meeting with Groundwork Hull, Hull City Council, Living With Water, Springhead Golf Club and councillor George Grozav to discuss flooding issues affecting the course. It was great to hear they’ve now hired a greens keeper, and several promising ideas were shared for managing the water which are now being explored.
On my way out, I met members of the Beverley and East Yorkshire Croquet Club, who found a new home in the park through the help of councillor Grozav. They spoke warmly about the community they had found and the lovely setting. New members young or old, including complete beginners, are always welcome! Bank services access in Willerby
With the closure of two banks in Willerby, I wanted to highlight that Wishes of Willerby still offer the same cash services at their Post Office kiosk as they always have done, as well as other Post Office services and the lovely gift shop.
You can get:
-Cash Withdrawal
-Cash Deposit (Debit Card)
-Balance Enquiry
-Cheque Deposit
-Cash Deposit (Deposit Slip/ Barcode)
I am working with Cash Access UK to find a way to bring a wider range of cash services to Willerby, but nothing has changed at Wishes and I would encourage customers to continue using their services.
Dino Day!
It was great to see Hull City Centre so buzzing yesterday for Dino Day.
The dinosaur shows were amazing and everyone was having such a wonderful time. Hull Butterfly City were so busy they had to run out and get more plant pots halfway through the day!
Thank you so much to Hull BID for organising another wonderful event!
Businesses of the week – celebrating local gems
Wilson 26 Café Bar in the heart of Anlaby is an absolute gem!
Whether you’re after a delicious meal, a slice of gorgeous homemade cake, or just a cosy cuppa, Wilson 26 has you covered. And now, they’re open late on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, transforming into a vibrant bar with a fantastic selection of drinks and often live music.
They’re currently in the process of revamping the space, and it’s so exciting to see it growing and thriving.
Carl Hammond is a family-owned furniture shop on Hessle Road selling mostly beds and sofas to Hull and East Yorkshire.
I firmly believe that when it comes to buying a mattress, you have to test it out in person! Paul has so much knowledge and experience- he looks at mobility, sleeping position and preference to make sure you get the right one for you!
They deliver right across East Yorkshire and across the bridge and even take away your old pieces. If you need a new bed, mattress or sofa, I’d recommend popping down to see the friendly team at Carl Hammond.
Humber Rescue Lifeboat open day
It was a brilliant day on Hessle Foreshore in the sunshine with over 2,000 people attending the Humber Rescue Lifeboat open day. Humberside Police, Humberside Fire and Rescue and the Coastguard were there too, and these organisations do a fantastic job working together to keep us safe.
Humber Rescue are an amazing group of volunteers – good people doing good things in our local community.
Private parking – have your say
Private car parks have been getting away with poor practice and unfair charges for too long. Enough is enough, and we are consulting on a legally binding Code of Practice to include
- Caps on unfair fines
- Debt recovery fees
- Mandatory grace periods at the end paid or permitted parking time.
- Clear signage

Hessle Feast and Hessle Hedgehogs afternoon cream tea this weekend
Just a reminder that Hessle Feast got the go-ahead for this Sunday the 31st. I will be there sharing my stand with Jenny’s Cat House and Butterfly City. Here’s hoping for good weather and a fab day!
At the same time, 12:00 – 5:00pm there’s Hessle Hedgehogs afternoon cream tea to raise funds for the hedgehog hospital. Tickets are available here.
They are still looking for some wonderfully kind people to bake a cake, some cupcakes, traybakes or some scones for their cake stand. If you are able to help, please DM them through their Facebook site with what you will be baking and they’ll let you know when and where these can be dropped off.
And of course there’s the Freedom Festival all weekend, with free events in the city centre Saturday and Sunday, as well as a host of other ticketed performances. Details of what’s on here.
And finally,
As always, I’m here to support you. I do a face-to-face surgery every week so you can always come and see me. If you have any questions, concerns, or ideas about how I can help, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Hull West and Haltemprice
P.S. I’ve received complaints about the condition of the pavements on the Shires and on Hull Road. One of my team went to have a look and take photos. They really were in poor condition and I have written to the respective councils. If you have problems with poor pavements or potholes and the council aren’t listening, please let me know.
