Dear Friend,
I hope this finds you well and that you’re finding a moment to enjoy the beautiful Spring days we’ve been blessed with recently.
A wonderful sign of innovation in our area was seeing the huge ship Wind Peak docked at the Siemens factory loading up with blades and towers to take out to the new wind farms in the North Sea. These blades are now recyclable, which is an industry first and another step forward to a truly Green economy.
Spring Statement Brings Hope Amid Challenges
Even with the sunny weather, I know many people feel uneasy about the global situation. That’s why I’m relieved the government is prioritising security with an additional £2.2 billion in defence spending. Protecting citizens is a fundamental responsibility, but there’s still more to do.
The Spring Statement also brought encouraging news—our country is turning a corner. While growth may slow this year, next year’s forecast has been revised upward. The Planning and Infrastructure Bill will play a key role in this progress, reforming planning rules to unlock potential and get our country building again. From rail tracks to flood defences, we urgently need to repair and renew.
I’m pleased to see wages rising faster than the cost of living and NHS waiting lists falling for five months in a row. We’re also improving military housing and investing in public services to support those who serve our country.
However, I understand that welfare changes are causing a real worry for some people and so I want to be clear that those unable to work will always have support, and without having to face degrading reassessments – a promise that was repeated by the Prime Minister this week. For those who can work, we’re committed to helping them find the right opportunities through initiatives like the “right to try,” where individuals can explore work without risking their benefits, and further investment in supporting and helping people.
I also want to reassure you all that this Labour government is committed to reducing child poverty, and we will soon publish details from the Child Poverty Taskforce recommendations. Our commitment is unwavering, and every department is exploring additional steps we can take. Because we haven’t yet published the taskforce’s recommendations, their actions weren’t reflected in the recent impact statement released with the Spring Statement. Of course, I will keep you updated.
Finally, we’re making tough but necessary decisions to reduce Civil Servant costs by 15%, ensuring taxpayers’ money is spent wisely. A £3.4 billion transformation fund will help make public services more efficient and cost-effective in the long term.
There’s still work to do, but these steps show we’re moving in the right direction.
Hull and East Riding Chamber of Commerce Event Highlights Opportunities and Challenges
Our region’s geography has always been key to its success, and once again it’s driving Hull and East Riding forward. With Net Zero initiatives on the horizon, we are perfectly positioned to benefit from offshore wind expansion, hydrogen gas development, new boiler technologies, and carbon capture and storage. These are HUGE opportunities for growth and prosperity.
Last week, local businesses met with Rt Hon Ed Miliband to discuss exciting investment prospects for our area. Building on this momentum, I plan to host an “Investing In The Humber” event in parliament to showcase all that Hull and East Riding has to offer. This matters because getting this right will mean creating good, well-paid jobs, improving living standards, and boosting our local economy.
However, businesses regularly raise concerns about obstacles like issues with the planning system and even water shortages. It’s shocking that these problems are still holding back growth, but we’re determined to tackle them. After all, more growth means more funding for essential services like the NHS, schools, and emergency responders—the things we all depend on.
With the right strategy, Hull and East Riding can lead the way in Net Zero innovation while strengthening our community and economy for years to come.
Businesses of the Month – Celebrating Local Gems
This month, I’ve been visiting some wonderful small businesses in Hull West and Haltemprice that truly showcase what makes our community special.
Gingers of Willerby
This charming dog-friendly café on Main Street, Willerby, is a must-visit. Their food is locally sourced, with meat from Gary Aldens Butchers in Hessle and excellent coffee from BlendingRoom on Boulevard. When I stopped by, I had a brilliant ham and salad sandwich—it was fantastic. Gingers also hosts themed evenings and quiz nights, so there’s always something fun going on – the next events are a Mediterranean evening on Friday April 11th and quiz night on Tuesday 17th.
Plant & Paint on Humber Street
If you’re out enjoying the sunshine, take a stroll down Humber Street and pop into Plant & Paint, a gorgeous independent plant shop. They sell stunning indoor plants and accessories and regularly host workshops. Lara and Emma, the small but mighty team, are always busy helping the community—they’ve even supported Hull Butterfly City’s buckthorn giveaways.
The Norland in Hessle
To round off your day, why not stop by The Norland in Hessle? This friendly pub is at the heart of the local community. They host over-55s afternoons and weekly bingo sessions every Sunday. The team is welcoming, and it’s a favourite spot for locals to relax and catch up.
These fantastic businesses show the strength and spirit of our community, so let’s keep supporting them! Whether it’s grabbing a bite, shopping local, or enjoying an evening out, there’s something here for everyone.
Update on Connexin Fibre Network Changes
You may have heard that Connexin’s fibre network in Hull and East Riding is being acquired by Cityfibre, including plans to expand the network.
I’ve been reassured by Connexin that Cityfibre is fully aware of the ongoing trials with KCOM to agree on infrastructure sharing. This process is still on schedule, with KCOM aiming for a final agreement by June.
Local residents have raised concerns about the number of broadband poles in the area, and I know how relieved everyone was when the installation of new poles was paused. To make sure progress continues smoothly, I’ve written to the Cityfibre Chief Executive to confirm their commitment to these plans.
I’ll stay closely involved to ensure that changes to our fibre network benefit the community. If you have any questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to reach out!
Labour Government Strikes Deal to Improve GP Services
Whenever I talk to residents, one of the main concerns I hear is about NHS services and the difficulty of getting a doctor’s appointment. That’s why I’m so pleased to share that Your Labour government has reached a new agreement with GPs—the first since the pandemic. This deal, backed by an extra £889 million next year, marks real progress in rebuilding general practice.
The deal includes:
• Online Appointment Booking: By October, all surgeries will offer online booking, putting an end to the stressful 8am scramble.
• Family Doctor Relationships: Financial incentives will encourage continuity of care, bringing back the trusted relationship with a family doctor.
• Cutting Red Tape: Nearly half of the current targets and measures will be removed, giving GPs more time to focus on patient care.
Combined with 2 million extra appointments and falling waiting lists announced last month, this is another big step towards putting the NHS back on its feet. Labour is committed to delivering the improvements we all need.
New Program Brings Brighter Smiles to Local Schools
Exciting news for children’s dental health! A new initiative called Prevention/Access/Treatment (PAT) is helping kids in our community build strong, healthy smiles that last a lifetime. Launched by our Integrated Care Board (ICB), PAT is already making a difference at Chiltern Primary, Newington Academy, and Rokeby Park Primary.
Here’s what the program offers:
• Daily Tooth Brushing at School: Kids brush their teeth under supervision, learning good habits.
• Twice-a-Year Dental Checks: Regular assessments help identify kids who need treatment, with care provided even if they don’t currently have a dentist.
• Fluoride Varnish Treatments: A special varnish is applied during these checks to protect teeth.
PAT is a fantastic example of smart planning and teamwork, improving children’s health while supporting local dental practices. This innovative program shows how a little creativity and dedication can bring big benefits to our community!

New Charter Helps Workers with Endometriosis
Ashleigh and Helen, founders of HEY Endo, are making a huge impact with the launch of their Workplace Best Practice Charter. This fantastic initiative, created with Hull and District Trades Council, supports those with endometriosis by encouraging workplaces to be more understanding.
Their dedication is inspiring—what began as a simple idea over coffee is now helping people stay in work. Several major employers have already signed up, and with free training available, it’s easy for more to join.
Thanks to Ashleigh, Nel and Helen’s hard work, Hull and East Yorkshire are leading the way in supporting workers with endometriosis.
Make Your Voice Heard on the Future of Our Water
Earlier this month, Labour’s landmark Water Act became law, giving new powers to tackle pollution by banning unfair bonuses for water bosses and introducing criminal charges for those who break the rules. As part of our Plan for Change to clean up rivers, lakes, and seas, the Independent Water Commission has been set up to help shape a better, more sustainable water sector.
The Commission is calling for evidence, and they want to hear from anyone who cares about protecting and improving our water. This is your chance to share your ideas and concerns—after all, cleaner water benefits us all!
The Call for Evidence is open until 23 April, and your contributions will help the Commission make recommendations to the UK and Welsh Governments this summer. Together, we can ensure a brighter future for our water.
Let’s seize this opportunity to make a difference!
