Dear Friend, Well, that’s quite a result! I’m so pleased to have been elected as the first MP for the constituency of Kingston upon Hull West and Haltemprice, to give it it’s full name. It is truly an honour and a privilege, and I am looking forward to representing everyone with the same energy and commitment I gave to the old constituency. I’d like to thank everyone who supported me. I have had many messages of congratulations, and they mean a great deal to me. All I have ever wanted is to do the best job I can for you all. As a subscriber to this newsletter, you know I fight for everyone in the constituency without fear or favour. Community Awards I managed to finish presenting my Community Awards before voting day. The Community Champion Award went to Dawn North for the amazing work she does with her team at Connect Community Church in Gipsyville. There they provide a fantastic play group for local families. There are games, crafts, singing and I have to say, as an ex-teacher I was so impressed by how calm and relaxed it all is. It’s such a welcoming and supportive atmosphere. It costs £1 for the whole family, and unsurprisingly there’s a waiting list. |

Armed Forces Day I also got to visit the event in Victoria Square for Armed Forces Day. Their service is invaluable and I’m so pleased that the new Labour government is committed to strengthening support for our Armed Forces communities by putting the Armed Forces Covenant fully into law and establishing an independent Armed Forces Commissioner to improve service life. Support after service is just as important, and Labour is committed to ensuring veterans have access to the mental health, employment, and housing they need. |

In government with new challenges For the first time I am a part of a Labour government. It is both exciting and daunting. We understand we have been given the job of restoring trust in politicians to put the needs of the country before party, and to rebuild so much that has been lost. It is a huge task, but one we are determined to meet. I have been encouraged by how quickly Keir has appointed his team and the way he has set about this task. I hope it is clear that the Labour Party has not been sat on its hands in opposition but has been making preparations should it win the general election, whenever that was called. That was certainly what I saw as a part of the shadow Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) team. I’m delighted to be able to say the Prime Minister has appointed me as a Parliamentary Under Secretary in DEFRA as Minister for Water. I’m excited to be at the beating heart of a Labour government ready to make changes to improve the lives of people right across the UK. Wish me luck! |
